The snow began to fall on us here in Forsyth County yesterday afternoon. By morning there was a thin, but nice blanket of snow across the landscape as I looked out my window. Sipping my coffee I did a little work from the home office as I watched the kids' not so successful attempt at a snowman. They had a little more success with the snow angels and snow ball fights. Forsyth County schools followed the early release schedule on Thursday and had a full snow day, along with Fulton County today. A great way to ease back into the school schedule after the holidays!
Hopefully the roads will be less treacherous tomorrow as I make my way out to take a few property photos. Thankfully the new year has begun with some increase in activity in the real estate market. Many are trying to take advantage of the tax credit before it expires in April, the low mortgage rates and the already low home prices and great deals currently available. It's a great time to buy! JOHNS CREEK, GA—The City of Johns Creek is currently in the process of establishing its 2009 millage rate. Because the city was not incorporated until Dec. 1, 2006, it cannot publish a five-year history of its tax digest, property tax revenues, and millage rate as is normally required. However, the city has published the information that is available for 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Each year the Fulton County Board of Tax Assessors is required to review the assessed value for property tax purposes of taxable property in the county. When the trend of prices on properties that have recently sold in the county indicated there has been an increase in the fair market value of any specific property, the Board of Tax Assessors is required by law to re-determine the value of such property and adjust the assessment. This is called a reassessment.
As a result of reassessment, the total amount of property tax collected by the city under the current millage rate is expected to decrease by 2 percent. This decrease does not include additional tax revenue generated by new construction and improvements to property.
Before the City of Johns Creek sets the final millage rate for 2009, three public hearings will be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions. All concerned citizens are invited to attend and participate in the public hearings, which will be held at Johns Creek City Hall Council Chambers, 12000 Findley Road, Suite 300, at the following dates and times:
Monday, Aug. 24, 11:30 a.m. *First Public Hearing
Monday, Aug. 24, 6 p.m. *Second Public Hearing
Monday, Sept. 14, 7 p.m. *Third Public Hearing
Action to adopt the final millage rate for 2009 is scheduled to take place at the Council meeting on Monday, Sept. 14, which begins at 7 p.m.

The public is invited to the groundbreaking ceremony on Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. for the new elementary school opening in August 2009 on Birmingham Highway in Milton.
Although site work already has begun, the ceremony allows school system officials, civic leaders and community members to gather and celebrate its construction. The public is invited to view architectural designs and hear about the school's planned features. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes with low heels due to gravel and possibly some muddy areas on the construction site. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be postponed until Nov. 13 at 1 p.m.
Designed to house up to 850 students in kindergarten through fifth grade, the new school is part of the capital programs effort in the Fulton School System, all funded through the through the one-percent educational sales tax, SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax).
Redistricting meetings to determine attendance zones for the new elementary schools, as well as existing schools in the area impacted by the opening, begin this week.
