Memorial Day Weekend is here and there are plenty of activities going on in and around the Metro Atlanta area. The Georgia DOT has also announced that they will scale back their construction projects across the state – suspending related lane closures on all interstate and major state system highways – through Monday to ease Memorial Weekend traffic congestion. Beginning at 5 a.m., Friday, May 25, and continuing until 10 p.m., Monday, May 28, there essentially will be no scheduled lane closures on any Georgia interstate highway or primary state route. So pack up the family and check out these exciting events:
Lake Lanier: Atlanta's favorite playground, with beaches, plenty of water to cruise around in, hiking trails, fishing and family activities. Just plan to be safe, as the lake gets very crowded on 3-day weekends. Perhaps consider Lake Lanier Islands Beach & Waterpark for a day of fun in the sun. Visit
www.lakelanierislands.com for more info.
Callaway Gardens: Want to head south? Check out the
Masters Water Ski & Wakeboard Tournament at Callaway Gardens. There will be activities for the whole family. In addition to the water skiing tournament, don't miss the Movies on the Beach series, where an inflatable movie screen will show family friendly fare while visitors lounge on Robin Lake Beach.
Atlanta Jazz Festival: The Atlanta Jazz Festival is a Memorial Day Weekend tradition. Three days of free live music in Piedmont Park, plus special jazz music events throughout Atlanta the entire month of May. Musical guests include the Tito Puente Jr. Orchestra and the David "Fathead" Newman Quintet.
Stone Mountain Park's Salute to the Troops: Special patriotic laser and fireworks show will awe visitors to one of Georgia's most famous landmarks during the Memorial Day holiday. Visit
www.stonemountainpark.com for more information, and to plan your day at the Park.
